During the 1920s, the state of France built a pair of oval rooms at the Musée de l’Orangerie as a permanent home for eight water lily murals by Monet. This particular painting was shown at the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874. In the landscape, a mother and child pair in the foreground and another in the background are merely a pretext for drawing the diagonal line that structures the painting. The young woman with the sunshade and the child in the foreground is probably the artist’s wife, Camille, and their son Jean.

Water Lilies at Sunset (Claude Monet, 1916, Musee de l’Orangerie, Paris)  When Monet came back to his water lily paintings in 1914 following the death of his beloved wife Alice in 1911, he made some radical changes in his approach, namely in the scale of the canvases. They were monumental in scale most measuring around two metres (six feet) square. The eight paintings, known as the Nymphéas, are displayed in two oval rooms in the Musée de l’Orangerie, located on the bank of the Seine in the old orangery of the Tuileries Palace on the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The paintings were donated by Monet to the French government in 1922.
